漏れのじいちゃん家が、代々の農家(結構広い田んぼ持ち)。
小３の夏休み、帰省中に農作業を手伝ったときのこと。
農作業終わってﾄﾗｯｸ乗る前に、じいちゃんに言われて、田んぼの方向いて二人で並んだ。
じいちゃんが「今日も、ありがとうございました！」と叫んで一礼。漏れも思わず真似る。
顔を上げたら、夕焼け色の空気の中、まだ綺麗な緑色をした稲穂が、波打つようにザーッと揺れた。
狭間から、夕日をｷﾗｷﾗと反射する水面が見えた。
「どういたしましてって意味だよ。」じいちゃんが言った。
帰りのﾄﾗｯｸの荷台からは、半月が見えた。荷台の土臭さと、夏の夜の濃い空気を今でも覚えている。
「自然に生かされているんだ。お礼を忘れたら駄目だ。」
日本人の神道信仰の由縁を知ったのは、あの日だったと思う。
